Leaf blowers are versatile machines. They can take the raking out of autumn cleanup, and also double as driveway sweepers or snow clearers. Some models vacuum; others bag mulch, clean gutters, or spray trees.  Leaf blowers are controversial due to noise and emissions issues. This controversy has prompted manufacturers to turn out new models that are quieter and more environmentally friendly, with a trend toward powerful electric leaf blowers that compete with louder, emissions heavy gas-powered blowers.

Some towns restrict decibel levels and hours of operation, while others have banned them outright.  But all that power serves a purpose: Blowers are the easiest way to quickly gather big messes of leaves into manageable piles.

The blower fits in a harness that's worn on the operator's back. The hose reaches to the front where the user operates the throttle and blow or vacuum tube. Backpack blowers are normally used in larger areas.

Handheld units are the most popular. Available in gas- or electric-powered versions, they're portable and convenient, yet powerful. These models can get heavy while using. Larger models can also vibrate a bit at full throttle. Consider the weight and balance of the unit when shopping.


All electric leaf blowers are handheld. If you’ve decided your yard demands a gas leaf blower, you have the option of handheld or backpack models that let you wear the blower in a harness on your back and position the handle, tube and throttle in front.


When choosing an extension cord, remember that if the gauge used is too small, the motor will not perform well. Match the power rating of the tool to a compatible cord. Always buy a cord rated for outdoor use.

Electric leaf blowers are lighter, quieter and vibrate less than gas units. An electric motor drives the fan, so there's no need to mix fuel or refill. Smaller yards are especially good candidates for electric blowers.
